Theme: Trust vs Suspicion—How Should We Approach the World?

We’re living in a moment where trust—in leaders, in government, in religion, in institutions, in each other—is at a generational low. On a personal, moral level, what attitude should we take? This involves questions about human nature. Are we mostly good? Mostly bad? Generally trustworthy or untrustworthy? Are we all ultimately in it for ourselves, or is there such a thing as virtue or altruism?

This essay should be approached philosophically, that is, using philosophical ideas about ethics and human nature, rather than personal narrative or mere opinion.

Submissions will be judged on quality and clarity of argument and expression as well as originality of contribution.

Open to all, no academic background required.

Deadline June 15 2025
